Artist-Painter of President Sukarno

art sculpture paintingsIn 1956 the "Paintings from the Collection of Dr Sukarno, former President of the Republic of Indonesia" was published by The People's Fine Arts Publishing House at Peking(now Beijing) consisting of Volume I and II which were later followed by Volumes III and IV in 1959.

Unfortunately my Volume IV was missing in my collection.
The publications consisted of 384 paintings, while His Excellency's collection of paintings is always increasing in accordance with the development of Indonesian culture and arts ever since the proclamation of Independence.

His Excellency President Sukarno has said:

"FREEDOM IS LIKE A GOLDEN BRIDGE FROM WHICH A NATION CAN DEVELOP THE POWER TO CREATE NOT ONLY IN THE MATERIAL SENSE BUT ALSO IN THE SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL SECTION."

Most of the art work were reproduced into 5 volumes publications of which Volume V composed of 167 reproduction of Sculptures and porcelains which were quite exclusive.
Lee Man Fong

Lukisan2 dan Patung2 Koleksi President Sukarno dari Republik Indonesia.

The presidential artist is Lee Man-Fong and according to him these paintings have their souls, some reflecting the beauty of nature, some depicts the live of the common people and others describing the Indonesian people fight for Independence.

Looking at these paintings enables one to feel the peace of mind, inspiration to work for the prosperity of the nation and the people in particular, and fills us with the inspiration of doing something for the happiness of mankind.

President Sukarno is not only a lover of art but an artist himself.

His Excellency inspirations has constructed a bridge of friendship between the Indonesian people and the peoples of the different countries of the world.
Indonesia president independence

Transcript of President Sukarno's note written on January 1st,1964.

"These current publications includes not only paintings but also sculptures and ancient porcelains.
The number of paintings and sculptures in my collection are increasing all the time"

In the present atmosphere of independence-FREE INDONESIA-art is sure to bloom.
Such is not the case in an atmosphere of colonialism!
The paintings and sculptures in my collection are not always of the same high quality.
However, those paintings and sculptures themselves proof of "the fruits of Independence"
Surely independent nations are happy nations!

Tanjung Priok to Soekarno-Hatta Airport

Tanjung Priok port is the largest and busiest seaport in Indonesia which was developed by the Dutch East India Company in 1877 replacing Sunda Kelapa which was dated back 1527.

The distance to Soekarno Hatta International Airport is 31km while to Jakarta City is a mere 10km.

TransJakarta Busway Corridor 12 covers till Tanjung Priuk Bus Terminal which was just across the train station built between 1917 to 1921 in the Indisch Classicism style of colonial architecture.

This is another old Dutch heritage building.

Since my flight home was later in the afternoon,I made a brief stopover in Tajung Priok to catch the airport bus.

Tanjung Priok Bus Station is a major transport hub in the North of Jakarta.

It was very convenient to travel in the local buses as they were very well linked to every corner of Java Island.

The word Tanjung means Cape and Periok means pot or wok.

I took a local green body bus near the Tanah Abang Train Station to Tanjung Priuk but for travellers staying near Sarinah Plaza, just go to the Sarinah Halt and hop into the busway which requires changing of bus at certain intersection.

Tanjung Priuk Bus Terminal do not have specific platforms for buses so one has to scout around and read the sign displayed on the buses.

Minivan angkut is a very covenient way to move round Tanjung Priok city and to visit Ancol Dream Park (Taman Impian Jaya Ancol), entrance ticket fee to the complex Rupiah15,000 per person which consists of Dunia Fantasi (Fantasy world) with ticket fee Rupiah150,000 per person in week days and Rupiah180,000 per person in week end-Sunday-and-Holiday, Atlantis Water Adventure (Waterboom) ticket fee Rupiah100,000 per person, Seaworld (for the largest aquarium in South East Asia), Gelanggang Samudra (Ocean Park) animals show ticket fee Rupiah90,000 per person, Fantastic Multimedia (Laser) Show ticket fee Rupiah50,000per person, resorts, hotel, beach, marina, and great restaurants.

It's one of the biggest park in Asia.
Ojek is a motorcycle that transport passengers and cost around Rupiah 5,000.

DAMRI airport bus is parked just across the train station in Tanjung Priok bus terminal.
It is a large airconditioned bus and departure is half hourly.
Current standard fare is Rupiah 20,000.
Operating Hours : 04.00 – 19.30 WIB (from Tanjung Priok), 05.00 – 23.30 WIB (from Bandara Soekarno Hatta Cengkareng).

WIB is west Indonesian time.

Ship transporting construction vehicles berthing in one of the channel beside the main road.

Travellers will never miss Tanjung Priok port if one intends to take a cruise in one of the ferry ships to destinations like Padang, Tanjung Pandan (Pulau Belitung), Surabaya, Semarang, Muntok (Pulau Bangka), Belawan, Kijang (Pulau Bintan) and Batam.

Services on the Lambelu to Padang and the Kelud to Batam (near Singapore) are of most interest to travellers.

To Kalimantan, the Lawit ship goes via Tanjung Pandan to Pontianak.

A number of Pelni boats go to Makassar (Sulawesi) via Semarang or Surabaya, but there are no direct services.

Pelni ships all arrive at and depart from Pelabuhan Satu (Dock No 1) at Tanjung Priok, 13km northeast of the city centre.

Other passenger ships also go from Dock No 1 to Pulau Bintan and Pulau Batam, from where it is just a short ferry ride to Singapore.

A small but reasonably comfortable air-con hydrofoil that seats up to 300 passengers leaves Tanjung Priok on Saturday at noon and sails to Tanjung Pandan (150,000Rp, 12 hours) onto Pulau Belitung, before continuing on to Tanjung Pinang (200,000Rp) and Batam (200,000Rp).

Count on a 24-hour trip to Batam. In the reverse direction it leaves Thursday.

PELNI (P.T.Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia) is the main national shipping company that provides inter island link to the people of Indonesia.

Tickets plus commission can also be bought from designated Pelni agents:
Menara Buana Surya (3142464; Jl Menteng Raya 29), in the Tedja Buana building, 500m east of Jl Jaksa; or Kerta Jaya (3451518; Jl Veteran 1 27), opposite Mesjid Istiqlal.

 Fares to the following destinations:

Batam:-Adult: first class 266,500 Rupiah, second class 200,500 Rupiah, economy 94,500 Rupiah; Ferry ride from Singapore to Batam takes 45 minutes costing Singapore Dollar 25.

Dumai:-Adult: first class 282,500 Rupiah, second class 212,500 Rupiah, third class 156,500 Rupiah, fourth class 131,500 Rupiah, economy 99,500 Rupiah;

Pontianak:-Adult: first class 480,500 Rupiah, second class 361,500 Rupiah, third class none Rupiah, fourth class none Rupiah, economy 168,500 Rupiah;

Pontianak using Ships code: LWT,SRM,BKR Adult / dewasa: first class 230,500 Rupiah, second class 173,500 Rupiah, third class none Rupiah, fourth class none Rupiah, economy 82,000 Rupiah;

 Surabaya:-Ships code: KRC,KRN,RJN Adult / dewasa: first class 166,500 Rupiah, second class 125,500 Rupiah, third class 93,000 Rupiah, fourth class 78,500 Rupiah, economy 59,000 Rupiah;

Pos Kota is an independent newspaper costing Rupiah 2,500 .

Travellers can find rooms to let if one intended to have extended stays.

Another article on the front page is about Amoy( girls) from Singkawang or Sambas in West Kalimantan that has landed from KM Mabuhay ship in Tanjung Priok but were caught by local police.

They left Sambas at 12 midnight and arrived here at 8pm following day.

Cungkok means entertainment girls. The 43 rural girls some were underaged(15 of them) and fair skin command double the price in the local bars and karaoke outlets.

Jakarta has an enriched nightlife in the many bars and karaokes. I have seen Southeast Asia's biggest redlight area at a place nicknamed Dolly in Surabaya,Jawa Timur.

Garuda Indonesia is listed as a 4-star airline by Skytrax, and is also listed among Skytrax's Quality Approved Airlines.

In May 2010, the airline was named as the World's Most Improved Airline by Skytrax during 2010 World Airline Awards in Hamburg.

Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (Indonesian: Bandar Udara Internasional Soekarno–Hatta) is the main airport serving the greater Jakarta area on the island of Java, Indonesia.

It is the 16th busiest airport in the world. The airport was named after the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno, and the first vice-president, Mohammad Hatta.

The airport is often called Cengkareng by Indonesians.
The airport's IATA code, CGK, originates from the name of the Cengkareng locality, a district situated to the northwest of the city.
Located about 20 km west of Jakarta, in Tangerang, Banten, Soekarno–Hatta airport began to operate in 1985, replacing the former Kemayoran Airport (domestic flights) in Central Jakarta, and Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in East Jakarta.

Visiting Blok M in South Jakarta

Traffic circle at Jalan MH Thamrin to Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat has a sculpture with Mahabharata themed Arjuna Wijaya chariot statue and fountain.

Arjuna Wijaya is a legendary Hindu warrior holding an archer with six galloping horses
According to legends,Arjuna, in a fit of extreme anger over the death of his son Abhimanyu, alone killed one akshauhini of Kaurava soldiers in a single day.
The National Monument (Monas) at the centre of Merdeka Square is just nearby.

Electronic Road Pricing along Jalan Hayam Wuruk leading to the Jalan Agus Salim area.

Due to the city's acute gridlock, the Jakarta administration implemented Electronic Road Pricing in 10 districts: Tanah Abang, Menteng, Setiabudi, Tebet, Matraman, Senen, Gambir, Tambora, Sawah Besar and Taman Sari.

It was quite effective when I noticed less vehicles on the road during working hours.

This model is similar to that  being in operation in the Singapore Island Republic.
The Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) (Malay: Sistem Kadar Jalan Elektronik; Chinese: 电子道路收费系统) scheme is an electronic toll collection scheme adopted to manage traffic by road pricing.

There were less congestion at around 7:00am till 10am and 4pm till 7pm where vehicles were required to have at least three passengers in the car.

There were traffic police enforcement to nab those defying the rules.

Jakarta is primarily a city of government and business.

It is seldom viewed as a centre for tourism other than the old part of the city which is a popular tourist destination.

However the Jakarta authority saw the opportunity to develop the city's reputation as a service and tourism city.

There were many new tourism infrastructures, entertainment centers, and international-class hotels and restaurants being built in Jakarta. Jakarta also possesses many historical places and cultural heritage.

Blok M is located in Kebayoran Baru,South Jakarta (Jakarta Selatan), originally planned as a satellite city, is now the location of large upscale shopping centres and affluent residential areas.

Jakarta Selatan functions as Jakarta's ground water buffer but recently the green belt areas were threatened by new developments.

Today most of the Central Business District area of Jakarta is concentrated in Setia Budi, South Jakarta, bordering the Tanah Abang/Sudirman area of Central Jakarta.

South Jakarta is the third most populous among the five cities of Jakarta, after East Jakarta and West Jakarta.

The administrative centre is at Kebayoran Baru. South Jakarta is bounded by Central Jakarta to the north, East Jakarta to the east, Depok to the south, West Jakarta to the north-west, and Tangerang to the west.

South Jakarta is divided into 10 subdistricts: Kebayoran Baru:last Dutch colonial residential,ASEAN Secretariat and Indonesian Stock Exchange located.

Kebayoran Lama:famous for being a burial place of Mohammad Hatta, the first vice president of Indonesia.

Pondok Indah is an upscale residential area.

Pesanggrahan:To the west is Tangerang Regency, Banten Province.Serpong-Jakarta railway pass through here.

Cilandak:National Atomic Energy Agency(Batan),Stephen Parish's Church

Pasar Minggu:traditional Sunday fruit market,Nederlandse International School,New Zealand School,Raguna Zoo.

Jagakarsa:Lake Babakan and Lake Mangga Bolong are the largest water reservoirs.Betawi people found here.

Mampang Prapatan:expatriates residential area.

Pancoran:statue of Dirgantara,Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery(those military casualties who died during Indonesian War of Independence)

Tebet:Manggarai and Tebet Railway Station

Setiabudi:part of the Golden Triangle of Jakarta .

Bus terminal of Blok M is quite different in style. There were about five lanes with each having a specific route destinations.

The moment the buses arrived at the waiting platform, passengers need to embark immediately as the buses do not stop for long similar to catching a train.

No smoking is allowed within this area despite being an open air station.
Violators will be fined up to Rupiah 5million or 6 months jail.
Ensure that you see designated smoking areas with stickers.

Only DAMRI buses at Blok M Plaza goes to Soekarno-Hatta International airport on a hourly basis.

Blok M Mall shopping arcade at the basement of the bus terminal,to gain access to Carrefour Hypermarket walk through a side door on the left near the no smoking banner.

The price of goods here are cheap as it is very popular among the locals due to lower property rentals here.

Most of the visitors attracted to Jakarta are domestic tourists from all over Indonesia, the majority of them from the neighboring provinces of West Java, Banten, Lampung, and Central Java.

As the gateway of Indonesia, Jakarta often serves as the stop-over for foreign visitors on their way to Indonesian popular tourist destinations such as Bali and Yogyakarta.

Most foreign visitors from the neighboring ASEAN countries; such as Malaysia and Singapore, visit Jakarta (to some extent also include Bandung) for shopping purposes, since the city is famous for its cheap but fair quality products, especially textiles, craft and fashion products.

Built in 1992, the Blok M Plaza is a modern mall.
Pasaraya Grande is a giant department store run by Abdul Latief. Its two contiguous buildings include a big food court in the basement  and a movie theatre at the top floor.

The most popular portion of Blok M and certainly what has given it most of its notoriety is the Falatehan street (Jalan Felatehan), which is the portion of the quarter that contains the bars and clubs.

Many of the bars become extremely crowded at night and are known to stay open extremely late.
Melawai street in the south has many cafes.
In 1980s - 1990s, Melawai street (called Lintas Melawai) popular as the youth centre of Jakarta.

Andong is a city two and half hour drive from Seoul is in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, South Korea but this shop in Blok M Plaza with the same maiden name diplays items of handicrafts and Buddhas statues.

Buddha in black robes statues.
Monastics in the Mahayana tradition wear many different colors, according to region, country, sect and ordination level.
Different temples in various regions wore different colors: yellow, light golden brown, brown, grey or blue, shades of black: pitch black, grey black.
Japanese monastics usually wear grey or black. They adopted the purple kesa tradition, which was revoked in the 17th Century under the Tokugawa Shogunate.
The emperor abdicated in protest and monks who resisted, no matter how high, were exiled.

Korean monks wear grey, brown or blue robes. In Thailand,Laos and Cambodia monks wear orange robes. Buddhism spread from China to Korea and later the Koreans spread it to the Japanese.

In the Sutra, Buddha explains that his Robe is “a mind that is gentle and forebearing.”

Dancing Idols Sculptures of the Hindu epic Ramayana.

While in Thailand if you were to go to Bangkok National Theater near Thammasat University, you will have a chance to watch these dance performances by Thai traditional dancers doing the Thai version of classical Indian Ramayana.

The easiest way to get to the National Theater is to take the sky train to the last stop, Sapan Taksin. Go out of exit 1 and walk towards the Chao Praya river. There you can take the Express boat to Tha Phra Ahtit where you'll get off the boat. Walk up Phra Ahtit Road and turn left at the junction under the bridge onto Rachini Road. If you keep walking for two or three more minutes you'll see the National Theater on the right hand side.

Glodok,Jakarta's Chinatown area budget hotels

Glodok is the biggest Chinatown in old Jakarta with lots of traditional markets, hawker stalls and temples.

The locals tend to call it Kota which might be confusing.
The best place to purchase electronics gadgets in Jakarta is in Glodok Plaza or the Chinatown.

This plaza has clusters of electronic stores that sell the hottest electronics gadgets at lower prices. You can find a wide array of laptops, computers, digital cameras, cell phones and more.

Glodok Plaza is also known as the Mangga Dua Mall and is commonly described as the Technology Bazaar.

Earlier I landed in Grogol which was far to the west on the way to Tangerang in Banten Province whereas Glodok is in Jakarta Pusat Prefecture. Both names sound quite the same.

From Sarinah Busway Halte, the TransJakarta busway fare was Rupiah 3,500 in a comfortable aircond ride will first take you to Harmoni Halte where you need to switch to the Glodok direction bus. It is advisable to look at the route map displayed at the exit doorway. There were staffs inside the station stop who were very helpful in providing assistance.

At the Glodok Busway Halte, there was no overhead pedestrian bridge so one need to dash across to either side.
Jalan Gajah Mada is in front while the other road near the Raja Mas Discotheque is known as Jalan Hayam Wuruk.

Jalan Gajah Mada is the main road leading from the beginning of Jalan Mangga Dua Raya southward up to Monas or Monumen Nasional.

Glodok is a popular place for the vibrant nightlife and redlight area of Jakarta.
Raja Mas is a medium size disco and a hardcore techno funky house.
